Launch: Green initiative in KZN

2011-06-06 00:00

THE launch of the KZN Greening Initiative on World Environment Day in Pietermaritzburg yesterday illustrated the kind of grassroots initiatives government hope to see emerging out of the 17th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 17) to be held in Durban later this year.

A first of its kind in South Africa, the initiative is a public-private partnership between the KZN government, the Wildlands Conservation Trust and Business SA.

Various targets have been set for the five-year programme, including the creation of 500 jobs, the planting of one million trees (primarily indigenous trees), recycling 75 000 tons of waste and the reforestation of 1 000 hectares of land.

KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize told The Witness that COP 17 has given the programme significant impetus, adding the initiative is one aspect of a wider programme aimed at rebuilding society.

Wildlands Conservation Trust CEO Andre Venter said over R10 million in corporate funding has been raised this year.
