‘Lazarus’ ignores court orderly’s call for Gcabashe, saying he is Khumalo

2014-07-31 00:00

THE alleged impersonator known as “Lazarus” has disputed the evidence of state witnesses who have testified against him in the Pietermaritzburg regional court.

Sibusiso John Gcabashe still maintains that he is the late Maskandi musician Khulekani Kwakhe Khumalo, affectionately known as Mgqumeni.

When he was yesterday called to the witness dock as “Gcabashe”, as the charge sheet states, he did not respond until the magistrate, Rose Mogwera, asked which name is he using.

“I am Khulekani Khumalo. I am not Gcabashe,” said “Lazarus”.

He denied knowing the witnesses who testified for the state during his trial.

“People turned against me because they believe that I am dead. I was saved by Shembe from where I was kept. As a staunch member of the church Shembe came to me and told me that I was not supposed to be in that place where I was staying with tokoloshes. All these witnesses don’t want to believe that I am Khumalo,” said Gcabashe.

He told the court that some of the things that were happening to him he can’t explain because he had lived with tokoloshes.

Gcabashe even

denied knowing a woman who testified she was his sister, Sebenzile Mkhize from Magqongqo. He said he has no sister by that name nor family in Magqongqo. “I am from Nquthu and my family is in Nquthu. I don’t know these people claiming to be my family. My mother and father are dead,” said Gcabashe. He faces three charges of theft allegedly committed in Durban, kidnapping, assault and rape allegedly committed at Ixopo, fraud and an attempted escape from custody at Nquthu.
