Le Clos overwhelms proud parents by handing them gold

2014-07-28 00:00

“WE will keep this medal!”

This was how Chad le Clos’s mother, Geraldine, reacted when the swimmer presented his parents with his first 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medal after winning the 200 m butterfly on Saturday.

Le Clos (22) improved his own Commonwealth record and touched the wall more than a second ahead of Australian Grant Irvine.

After the ceremony where Le Clos accepted his medal he walked over to his parents and two brothers, Jordan and Justin, and gave the medal to his father, Bert.

His father then hung the medal around Geraldine’s neck.

“This was very special and unexpected,” Geraldine told sister paper Beeld from Glasgow.

She said her nerves were shattered during Chad’s swim.

“I have over the years learnt it is better for me to drink Rescue Remedy before one of Chad’s races, so I did it again.”

Her husband — who is normally more relaxed, also could not sit still for this swim, she said.

She was so overwhelmed during the medal ceremony that she could not recall what she said to her son.

She said she liked the design of the Commonwealth gold medal, which is totally different from the rest of Chad’s gold medals.

The ribbon, however, did not compliment the medal’s design, she felt.

Chad’s sister Bianca is the only member of the Le Clos family who is not in Scotland.

She instead watched the swim on television, yelling so loud she almost lost her voice.

“It was very tense,” she said.

When her brother handed his medal over to their parents, Bianca burst into tears.

“It was so special of him to do that.”
