Learn to make felt by hand with Macs

2010-09-30 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG feltmakers will be joining other feltmakers from around the world from 8 am on Saturday to make the public aware of the ancient art of making non-woven cloth.

It is the second year that the Midlands Arts and Crafts Society (Macs) is taking part in FeltUnited, and its members have prepared an exhibition of handmade felted pieces.

“Come and see what handmade felt is all about, because it’s not only for ‘arty’ nomads in outer Mongolia and other places who have been surviving severe weather conditions for generations,” spokesperson Wendy Bloy told The Witness.

Macs will also be hosting an introductory felt-making workshop, which will cover the basic process, discuss a number of approaches for surface design, and the basic concept of resist (i.e. making bags, etc) from 9 am to 3 pm. The R190 admission fee includes a starter kit of one white and three (colour of your choice) fleece balls.

Parking is available via the 23 Ritchie Road entrance as well as outside 23 Haldane Road, Pietermaritzburg. Phone Joy at 033 386 6500 to book and for further details.
