Lecture: Talk on the essential components of life

2012-06-18 00:00

PROFESSOR Kesh Govinder will present a lecture entitled “Order and Disorder: Essential components of life” on Thursday, June 21 at 5.45 pm at the John Bews Lecture Theatre, Life Sciences Campus, in Carbis Road.

The universe is moving towards a greater state of disorder. However, there are a variety of very ordered structures or processes in nature, many of which are crucial to the continuation of life. Govinder will describe and explain some of these structures and processes, as well as why disorder is also critical to life and why the existence of order and disorder is inherent in life as we understand it.

Govinder is a professor of applied mathematics and dean and head of school of mathematics, statistics and computer science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

He has diverse research interests including mathematical physics (cosmology and relativistic astrophysics), mathematical biology (epidemiology and cancer modelling), analysis and solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations as well as extensions and applications of group theory (including symmetry algebras).

He is a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the American Mathematical Society, the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (life member) and member of the International Astronomical Union and African Society for Biomathematics.

Light refreshments will be provided. Enquiries: Edith Elliott 033 260 5455.
