‘Legalise dope’: Durban joins global march

2011-05-07 00:00

SOUTH Africans who want to legalise dagga will join hundreds of cities around the world in solidarity with the annual Global Marijuana March (GMM) today.

The National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) will gather in Durban to spread the word. The GMM was first held in 1999, and it became an annual march held on the first Saturday of every May.

Imiël Visser, spokesperson for NORML, said the Global Marijuana March is a celebration embracing cannabis culture as a personal lifestyle choice. “Participants unite to discuss, promote, entertain and educate both consumers and non-consumers alike.”

He said NORML supports the right of adults to use cannabis responsibly, whether for medical or personal purposes, adding that a legally regulated market should be established at which consumers can by buy cannabis in a safe and secure environment.
