Legendary musical weekend for Durbs

2014-11-24 00:00

SINGER John Legend’s tale of success is one all budding stars of the stage should learn from. On Friday night, a sellout crowd at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, so long neglected by concert organisers, turned up to be entertained and Legend did not disappoint. He teased the audience with his chart toppers but also took those lucky enough to hold a ticket onto a musical journey of his life. Legend burst onto the music scene in 2004 with his breakthrough album but in reality had been trying to establish himself since 1999. His journeyman tale of doing background vocals for stars like Jay-Z, Kanye West and Alicia Keys added to the magic of the evening and endeared him to an audience that had been promised an amazing performance.

Legend’s powerful musical grace and cigar lounge balladry was complimented with an almost non-stop performance. There were no intricate costume changes and no high-octane dance routines, allowing the audience to appreciate every interaction with the singer and every powerful and soulful note. Legend, born John Roger Stephens, has been said to be as smooth as legendary crooner Marvin Gaye and as street smart as Outkast and the audience, made up of young and old, fully appreciated the piano playing singer. The rain that had been lurking above Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday night did not materialise but the performance that had been promised was fully delivered.

Legend ended his performance with The Best You’ve Ever Had, a goose-pimple inducing performance that had what seemed like every audience member joining in. — WR.
