Legislature: CFO Buthelezi only in 'caretaker' role

2010-08-27 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has assured MPLs, staff and the public that its “caretaker” chief financial officer, Sipho Buthelezi, has, for the past three months since his secondment, executed his duties in a professional and dedicated manner.

Buthelezi was arrested and appeared in court on Wednesday with two other former senior KwaZulu-Natal government officials, Dr Busisiwe Nyembezi (former Health HOD) and Victor Mduduzi Ntshangase, who is a former Health Department procurement officer.

In a statement issued yesterday, spokesperson Wonder Hlongwa said developments will be watched “with keen interest” and that the legislature “wishes that the matter is brought to finality as soon as possible”.

Buthelezi is out on R10 000 bail after a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

The three officials are set to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on December 2.

They are among eight people arrested on Wednesday morning by the Hawks, the Asset Forfeiture Unit and the police in Cape Town, Durban and Pietermaritzburg in connection with a R200 million fraud, corruption and money laundering investigation.

Hlongwa said the legislature wishes to place on record that Buthelezi is not chief financial officer of the Legislature, but “caretaker CFO” following the departure of former CFO Siphiwe Sokhela.

“Mr Buthelezi was seconded to the legislature from the Treasury following the legislature’s request for a caretaker CFO. The legislature is in the process of advertising the position.”
