Legislature scraps apartheid laws

2011-08-12 00:00

HISTORY was made in the KZN Legislature yesterday with the repeal of long-standing apartheid legislation from the province’s statute books.

The passing of the KZN Umsekeli Laws Repeal Bill yesterday saw the final demise of the old Development Services Board, which ran townships and later became known as Msekeli. Some 160 pieces of apartheid-era laws and proclamations were also removed with the passing of the Local Government Laws Repeal Bill.

Speaker Ravi Naidoo said these were laws that were part of the apartheid machinery at work.

The historic theme was continued with a debate proposed by the ANC on the exceptional achievement of the party in celebrating its centenary this year.

The Democratic Alliance said the ANC of today does not reflect the integrity and discipline of its founders, while the Inkatha Freedom Party spoke of its own leader’s links to the historic ANC and decried the disrespect shown by the current ANC Youth League to IFP leaders.
