Legislature to visit Nongoma

MEMBERS of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature will get an opportunity to interact with the people of Zululand District as the legislature holds a three-day sitting in Nongoma from tomorrow.

The visit is part of MPLs’ commitment to strengthen participatory democracy in the province.

Speaker Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni said the sittings, which will end on Thursday, will be held at Mthashana FET College, KwaGqikazi campus, in Nongoma.

“This programme of taking legislature to the people will give members an opportunity to interact with the people and understand their needs [to] accelerate service delivery in their areas,” said Nkonyeni.

The programme has also enhanced the oversight role as members get to know the realities on the ground through direct interaction with the public, she added.

The sitting was preceded by a visit to the municipalities in the district by a multi-party committee of members of the legislature. During the visits, people raised various issues that affect them in their areas.

“A comprehensive report of the multi-party delegation has been prepared and will be tabled and debated by the legislature during its sittings in Nongoma,” Nkonyeni said.
