Lesser-known players central to Super Kings’ win over Stags

2010-09-13 00:00

THE Chennai Super Kings recovered from some early setbacks to beat the Central Stags by 57 runs in their opening Airtel Champions’ League T20 match at Kingsmead on Saturday.

The Indian Premier League champions suffered the early setback of losing Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina in the first two overs, but recovered through the batting of two of their lesser-known players, Subramaniam Badrinath and Anirudha Srikkanth.

Badrinath was a well-deserved man of the match for his 52 off 42 balls, while Srikkanth contributed 42 off 29 balls.

This partnership of 73 in eight overs was the prime contribution to the Super Kings’ total of 151, with Albie Morkel providing the finishing touches with his 26 off 15 balls.

The Stags were never in the chase and subsided to 94 all out in 18.1 overs.

The seamers did the damage up front and then the spinners took over. Muttiah Muralitharan took 2/15 in four overs, including 13 dot balls, while there were three wickets for Lakshmipathy Balaji.
