Letter: Council congratulates Barack Obama

2008-11-06 00:00

Msunduzi Municipality is to send a letter of congratulation to U.S. president-elect Barack Obama.

This comes after the council declined to send congratulatory remarks to Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille, who was named the world’s best mayor, after this was requested by DA members last week.

Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo said Obama’s presidential victory is not about being black or white, but about good leadership. She said congratulations are in order because of the sister relationship Pietermaritzburg has with Atlanta and because South Africans understand African-Americans’ struggles for civil rights.

She likened Obama to former president Nelson Mandela.
