Liberty Mall murder suspect’s bail application refused

THE Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday refused to grant bail to the man charged with stabbing his fiancée to death at Liberty Mall on July 7.

Nkululeko Ngubane jumped off a nearby bridge to the N3 in an apparent suicide attempt after the murder of Sindiswa Mshengu, a security officer at the mall.

Yesterday he hobbled into court using crutches and was helped into the dock by orderlies. He is recovering from injuries sustained in the jump.

Magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde refused his bail application, saying he had not divulged how he sustained his injuries.

The court said he is receiving medical treatment at prison and is in a safe place.

In his bail application, Ngubane had said he was not receiving treatment in the prison hospital. He alleged that he hadn’t received any pain medication since his tablets ran out on August 13, no doctor had seen him at the prison, and the authorities had failed to take him for check-ups at Northdale Hospital.

However, this was disputed by a Correctional Services Department official who testified in court.

He will be back in court on October 2 to be served with indictments.
