Licence fraud: Arrests at Himeville

2008-06-19 00:00

The police campaign to clamp down on a learner licence fraud scheme netted several more people in Himeville this week.

KwaSani municipal manager Sibusiso Gwacela confirmed Wednesday’s arrests of three traffic officials from his council’s licensing department.

A source told The Witness that at Himeville it costs a person R500 to get a learner’s licence and as much as R4 000 for a C1 (Code 10) driver’s licence.

Further alleged arrests in Ixopo and uMzimkhulu could not be confirmed.

“We will not say who we arrested at this stage until they come to court and we will not say who is next lest we tip others off,” said a police source.

Gwacela said the arrests are being carried out by the Special Crimes Unit and the suspects will appear in the Himeville Magistrate’s Court today.

Last Friday, three traffic officials and three driving school operators from Richmond were arrested on charges of collaborating in collecting bribes from candidates.

Four of the accused are out on R1 000 bail.
