Life dedicated to ‘Witness’ and accountancy

2012-10-10 00:00

WILLIAM Vorster, a former Witness board member and financial director of the Natal Witness group, has died. He was 75.

Vorster, who retired in 2002, worked for The Witness for 42 years.

During that time, he held a number of senior positions, including Natal Witness general manager. He was also a chairperson of the Shuter and Shooter group, as well as serving on the board of two of the Shuter group’s subsidiary companies.

In 1993, Vorster was elected president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

In a maiden speech following his election, Vorster said chartered accountants must be a stable, future-oriented, reliable force in the community.

“Chartered accountants must be seen to be contributing in practical ways to the life of the community as a whole, in order for them to retain their relevance and slough off the image of elitism.”

Vorster was a dedicated and committed Witness man, says Stuart Craib, chairperson of Witness Printing and Publishing. “He was a shy, quiet and unassuming person, but with a great knowledge of all departments of The Witness business and its subsidiaries. He enjoyed the theory of business and was a sounding board for everyone.”

Vorster is survived by his wife, Jean.

A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11am at the Upper Umgeni Presbyterian Church, 67 Main Street, Howick.
