‘Life is going to change’

PETROL stations made provision for the influx of motorists on the eve of the increase in the petrol price to an all-time high of R8,01.

Motorists queued as expected last night in an attempt to get “cheaper” petrol, saying the price is “ridiculous”. The Witness went to different filling stations in the evening to get drivers’ views on the price increase.

Khethiwe Simelane said the situation is frustrating. “This is upsetting and frustrating. Life is going to change, we will have to park our cars … we will reach a state where we can’t afford to use them.”

Nithaya and Anashree Chetty said the price increase will have a negative effect on the economy among other things. “This is very difficult for the economy because as the petrol price increases, it will fuel interest rates.”

Siya Mbili: “The sad thing is that salaries do not increase as regularly as petrol does … if they do”.

Bradley Biggs: “I can’t handle the cost of petrol … I will have to sell my vehicle.”

Bonga Sangweni: “Life is going to be difficult, especially for motorists, but everybody will feel the pinch because food, public transport and everything will sky-rocket.”

Bruce Goddard: “The government should sort it out; petrol price keeps on rising, what are we going to do? Businesses will collapse … ”

Richard Harrison said fuel price increases are an international phenomenon. “It’s one of those facts of life, in the UK it’s a lot higher. I would advise people to buy economical vehicles instead.”
