TWO teenagers were killed by lightning and hundreds of people evacuated as a result of floods caused by storms in the Durban area on Saturday night.

Siphosethu Ngxoli and his neighbour Siphamandla Zwane were struck and killed by lightning in Welbedacht East, near Chatsworth.

According to a statement from the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department, Ngxoli was running to save Zwane, his friend , who had just been struck by lightning when he was hit as well.

Hhundreds of people lost their homes when heavy rain led to flooding in the Cato Crest informal settlement near Cato Manor. An estimated 300 families are being housed temporarily in community halls in the area.

Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube visited the bereaved families of the two teenagers yesterday morning. “It is sad that our people are increasingly becoming victims of thunder strikes.

“Just a few days ago, six people in Bergville were also killed by lighting,” she said, adding that her department will embark on an education campaign in order to reduce the number of deaths due to lightning.
