Limited Edition FIFA Wines Go on Auction

2010-10-19 00:00

THE agreement that Fifa signed with Nederburg that entitled the Paarl winery to make and market a range of South African wines for the 2010 football World Cup has given the winery a range that celebrates our diversity and success as a nation.

Cellar master Razvan Macici developed a special edition collection of three South African wines for the tournament, which were sold locally and internationally.

The three limited-edition wines were a Cabernet Sauvignon, a dry rose and a Sauvignon Blanc. Sold in bottles made from partially recycled glass, they spanned the 2007 to 2010 vintages.

The white and rose were sold under a screwcap.

“The three wines bearing the 2010 Fifa World Cup emblem carry Nederburg’s hallmark blend of fruit intensity and finesse. They are intense, but graceful and are clearly South African in that they have a very clear expression of fruit, but restrained classical styling, making them fresh, approachable and food-friendly,” said Macici.

Margate Round Table#46, with the help of Distell, managed to secure six bottles, two of each of the three limited wines produced, for the annual Stephen Esterhuysen Memorial Wine Auction.

Three of the bottles will be auctioned off in a matching Nederburg 2010 wine cabinet of which only 1 000 were made.

“Come and bid for your part of South Africa’s history on Thursday October 28 at the Margate Hotel,” said organiser Werner van Dyk.

“Tickets cost R100 and all funds raised will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis unit in Durban.”
