POLOKWANE — A flamboyant ANC businessperson who is a friend of EFF leader Julius Malema, is behind bars after he being arrested for fraud involving R9 million.

Jacques Nell (47) who was named “Jabulani” by his ANC cadres, two years ago rubbed shoulders with Mathews Phosa and Cassel Mathale, former premier of Limpopo. He also spent a holiday with in 2011 saam met Malema, then still the ANC youth leader, and Mathale in Italy in July 2011. The Hawks arrested Nell on Wednesday in Pretoria. He faces charges of fraud involving fraudulent documents he allegedly supplied to secure a R9 million loan from Absa.

Nell was the owner of Data Master Office Automation CC, which sold Xerox products. He closed the doors of this business at the end of 2012, without any warning to his employees. Review, a local newspaper, reported that Nell and his family recently enjoyed a skiing holiday in France. Yesterday, he looked uncomfortable as he fiddled with his striped jacket in the accused’s dock.

Desiree van der Walt, the local DA caucus leader, in February 2012 laid charges with the Hawks concerning tenders involving millions of rands that Nell had allegedly won irregularly. One tender for copier rental for three years to the Department of Roads and Transport involved R14 million. The investigation continues.

Nell, a former chairperson of the Polokwane Chamber of Commerce, was an ANC candidate in the 2011 local elections and supported Greytown evangelist Angus Buchan during the 2011 Mighty Men conference.
