Lincoln Meade outcry over landfill rubbish spill

2012-12-18 00:00

THE Lincoln Meade landfill site is in an appalling state, with poor maintenance resulting in an overflow of rubbish all over the area.

A resident who did not want to be named said: “I have never seen the site in its current state. It may as well be closed if the local municipality can’t maintain it.”

A municipal insider blamed the situation on incompetent managers and supervisors who were responsible for the maintenance of the landfill.

“Our Bomaq and Caterpillar landfill compactors are broken down, leaving the site with only hired machines and trucks, which are inadequate to man the dumpsite as they broke down frequently,” he said.

“… we were happy when management bought a Bomaq landfill compactor this year, but that has broken down twice this year already because it was not suitable to deal with the condition of the dumpsite,” said the insider.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi told The Witness that he was not aware of the problem. “I was informed that two of our landfill compactors are in the workshop undergoing repairs and they should be ready to work any time, but there is one operating at the landfill so we should not be having this problem,” he said.

Nkosi said he had instructed acting deputy municipal manager Sipho Dubazane and some officials to do a thorough investigation of the problem at the site.
