Linden’s ashes set to arrive

2011-12-28 00:00

AFTER almost three weeks of waiting, the family of executed Durban drug mule Janice Linden may finally get her ashes today and be able to go ahead with a funeral service.

Linden’s family put their Christmas on hold while officials tasked with delivering her ashes from China have been enjoying the festive period.

International Relations spokesperson Clayson Monyela said yesterday that while he was not able to discuss the exact logistics with media, the ashes should be delivered to the family today.

“The family are very well aware that the ashes were to be sent to them when officials arrived back at work. It’s a complicated time right now for both the Chinese and South African governments with people on leave,” he told The Witness.

Linden’s nephew, Ntando Mthalane, however, said that the family was being given the “runaround”.

“We were told that we would receive the ashes in the week that she was executed and that the ashes were in Pretoria, so we were preparing a proper Catholic ceremony for her.

“Then media pressured them into communicating with us last week Tuesday when they told us that the ashes were in fact still with the South African Embassy in China — they told us they would be with us on Thursday. Now they are telling us they are still in China,” he said.

Mthalane said Christmas was bleak for the family since they wanted to give his aunt a decent send off before they could find some closure.

Linden was executed in China on December 12, after being convicted for smuggling three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine or tik in 2009.
