Lindsay van Aswegen takes bronze in 100?km World Championships

SOUTH African Lindsay van Aswegen earned bronze in the 100 km World Championships held in Winschoten, Netherlands, on Saturday.

The Comrades runner completed the 10-lap race in seven hours, 42 minutes and five seconds behind Russian Marina Bychkova (7:27:19) and Britain’s Joanna Zakrzewski, who finished second in 7:41:06.

Van Aswegen came first in the 40-44 age category.

Lance Chapman became the king of Mont aux Sources after winning the annual 50 km from Royal Natal to the source of the Tugela and back down in 5:04:59.

The 38-year-old had a clear lead as he started and had opened a 16- minute lead on second placed Marius Ueckermann who crossed the line in 5:20:52.

Bongakosi Zwani won the 15 km Springlake Colliery Mpati mountain race in an impressive 59 minutes 50 seconds.

The Madadeni runner opened up an unassailable lead over Mr Price’s Kwenya Ngubane, who was over 400 meteres off the pace.

Nationally this weekend the SA Cross-country Championships are being held in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Runners with queries on arrangements should contact the office at 031 312 7394.

This event will be used to select the squads for the Southern Region and World Cross-country championships in 2012.

The Bonitas City-to-City 50 km Ultra is revived this weekend with the race commencing from the Gautrain station in Centurion at

6 am on Saturday.

There are 21 km and 10 km events. Entries for the shorter event will be taken this weekend.

The Duke of York 16 km race is the major race on the local calendar, commencing from Ashburton (Boulder Hill) at 7 am on Sunday.

Runners should note that due to the Hill to Hill Mountain Bike race, the start of the race may be delayed in order to avoid clashes.

Runners and cyclists will be kept to different sides of sections of the road during the race.

The race is open to runners and walkers and includes a fun run.

Vryheid is the host for the Ithala Challenge on Saturday morning.

The 30 km and 10 km events commence from Ntshodwe Camp in Ithala Game Reserve. Contact Ingrid Kusel at 073 867 5712 for further details.

In Durban, SAPS Striders host the Sanlam half-marathon, which starts from King’s Park Stadium at 6 am. The route is a modified version of the Savages Challenge using the NMR, Snell Parade and Durban North areas and is open to runners and walkers. V.G. Naidoo has more details at 082 418 0743.

At King’s Park Track on Saturday the fourth of the sub-youth leagues starts with a five kilometre walk at 7.30 am and finishes with the 200 metre sprints at 4.50 pm.

The league is open to all 15-year-olds and younger.
