Line-up for the first school year weekend

2010-01-16 00:00

THERE are only four school cricket matches today on the first Saturday of the school year, with only one from the schools top level. KZN schools have, however, been active before the school term began.

The three-day festival at Maritzburg College involving KZN schools, College, Westville, Glenwood and Clifton, the four-day Alex Festival that involved second tier schools Alexandra, Howick, Wartburg, Voortrekker and Treverton and then the three-day KKS Hilton Festival involving Hilton, Michaelhouse, Kearsney and St Charles, ended yesterday.

The only school matches today, with the independent schools only starting school next week, involve Westville against Maritzburg College, Glenwood against Howick, Thomas More against Glenwood II and Wartburg playing Alexandra.

Contrasting form was shown by College and Westville at the festival, which will make College favourites in their first domestic fixture. The three schools that both KZN schools played were St Johns, St Davids and the Australian visitors, Canberra Grammar.

College won narrowly against St Johns, by four wickets against Canberra and comprehensively against St Davids. Westville generally struggled, losing to both St Davids and St Johns and were rained off against Canberra, but after scoring 239 for 3 they were likely to win.

College had three senior players, Nicholas Hendrie, Tyler Lortan and SA Schools player Calvin Savage, away at the Under-18 Cubs Franchise Week in Stellenbosch and Westville were missing one player, Sashlin Reddy, all of whom were playing for the Dolphins.

Glenwood are also involved but against second-tier Howick. Glenwood will also be strengthened by the return of their Dolphins Cubs players, Sumanth Sunkari and Prenelan Subrayen, who were missing in a reasonably successful three matches at the College Festival.

Howick was very successful at the Alex Festival — winning all four games — but the level of competition was not of Glenwood’s standard. It will be interesting to see whether Gary Hodgkinson will be successful as he took 16 wickets in the recent four matches and was the most successful bowler of the week. Howick will be very keen to be as competitive as possible.

Tomorrow evening, following the MTN40 game between the Dolphins and the Titans at the Maritzburg Oval, Maritzburg College play St Charles in a 20/20 match to launch the schools Day/Night league.
