Lions? Not us, say healers

2008-12-17 00:00

Traditional healers have distanced themselves from, and denied any knowledge of, the killing of two lions in their enclosure at the Lion Park near Camperdown on Saturday.

The owner of the Lion Park, Brian Boswell, and Detective Inspector Riaan van Rooyen of the organised crime unit in Pietermaritzburg both suspect that the lions may have been killed for muthi.

The chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Health Practitioners’ Council, Sazi Mhlongo, said the traditional healers had nothing to do with the killing of the lions.

He said the speculation that traditional healers might have killed the lions worries him because this indicates that traditional healers are being undermined.

Mhlongo said izinyanga cannot claim to heal with lions because they are not easily available to them.

However, he added, if investigations show that the lions were killed for muthi, it would not protect the perpetrators.
