Lions River: Three killed after 18-wheeler truck overturns on N3

2011-05-16 00:00

THREE men were killed and another was seriously injured when an 18-wheeler truck overturned on the N3 near the Lions River Bridge early yesterday morning.

It took almost two hours for rescue services to free the surviving man from the wreckage.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said it seems the man was asleep in the back compartment of the cabin, covered in layers of blankets. He had a broken arm.

Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the truck left the northbound carriageway on a bend, crossed the southbound lanes, and rolled down an embankment before landing on its roof.

It is still unclear what caused the accident, and a police investigation is under way.

Police are also investigating a accident in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night. A head-on collision between a truck and a Toyota Venture on the Edendale Road near Taylor’s Halt left two people critically injured.

ER24 paramedics report that the truck might have been driving on the wrong side of the road.

The two occupants of the Venture were pulled out by local residents and covered with blankets to keep them warm.

The occupants of the truck are believed to have fled from the scene.

In Durban 12 people were injured, one man critically, when a fully laden minibus taxi and bakkie collided on Mahatma Gandhi Road yesterday morning.

Wicks said in a press release, “Netcare911 paramedics arrived at the scene to find that a bakkie travelling towards the harbour had slammed into the side of a minibus, which had crossed the junction. Both vehicles skidded to a halt nearby.

“The injured had spilled from the wreckage and were found lying nearby.”

The injured were stabilised at the scene before being taken to hospitals in the area.
