Lions aim to add to Aces’ problems

KWAZULU-NATAL promotion hopefuls Nathi Lions will aim to take advantage of an Mpumalanga Black Aces camp in disarray when the teams clash in the first leg of their National First Division promotion/relegation play-off tonight at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank. Kick-off is at 7.30 pm.

Apparently unhappy with the players’ commitment as they could only finish 15th in the PSL, Aces’ management has told six players to stop reporting for training.

These include former Teboho Mokoena, Clifford Mulenga, Jacob “Dukes” Machaka, Sibusiso Temba, Tebogo Monyai and goalkeeper Oscar Ramoagodi.

Aces took their place in the playoffs by virtue of their second-last finish in the PSL. They are joined there by Nathi, who were runners-up in the Coastal stream, and this afternoon’s other two semi-finalists, Inland winners Black Leopards and runners-up African Warriors. Leopards lost 3-2 on aggregate to Vasco Da Gama in the NFD final, which saw the Coastal stream winners promoted to the PSL next season.

Lions assistant coach Julius “JD” Dube did not want to over-stress the importance of Aces’ off-field problems, saying it is all about how the KZN side takes advantage of the situation come match day.

Dube said Lions will travel to Mpumalanga with an injury-free squad.

In the other play-offs clash, Leopards host QwaQwa-based Warriors at Tshifulanani Stadium, Limpopo. Kick-off is at 3 pm.

The second-leg clashes are scheduled for next Wednesday.
