Lions call on Jantjies for Kings match

CAPE TOWN — The Lions plan on using Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies for their two upcoming Super Rugby promotion-relegation matches against the Kings.

According to the Rugby365 website, the 22-year-old, who is currently on loan to the Stormers, will return to Johannesburg after the Cape side’s final league game against the Bulls at Newlands on July 13.

The Lions’ two promotion-relegation games are on the weekends of July 26 and August 2.

The Stormers recently expressed an interest in signing Jantjies and fellow Lion Jaco Taute on a permanent basis, but according to Lions coach Johan Ackermann that will have no bearing on Jantjies’s involvement against the Kings.

“Elton said he will return [to the Lions], but he wants to complete the Super Rugby season in Cape Town,” said Ackermann.

“For the next two weekends, he will play for the Stormers, before we will see him. He is available [to the Lions] for the promotion-relegation matches.”

However, a tug-of-war between the Stormers and Lions could ensue if the Stormers manage to secure a Super Rugby play-off spot, although this is unlikely. The play-offs are on July 19 and July 20.

Ackermann said Jantjies will also play for the Lions in the Currie Cup, but he admitted that there is no certainty about Jantjies’s future beyond 2013.

“That process will run its course between the [Golden Lions Rugby Union] CEO Manie Booysen and the agent.

“If Elton wants to stay, we would certainly look at retaining him. He would obviously negotiate with the various unions.

“He has always been happy here and if we can retain him it would be great.

“However, that process — between him, the agent and the unions — will run its course,” said Ackermann.
