Lions cubs survive against the odds

PORT ELIZABETH — Game wardens at the Addo National Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape are smiling after three lion cubs survived on their own for almost two months.

The six-month-old cubs went into hiding when their mother, Gina, died in December. Although visitors reported seeing the cubs peering through bushes on several occasions, the warden could not find them. The search for them was called off last week, as chances of the cubs surviving on their own for seven weeks were remote, as they could not yet hunt on their own.

But on Saturday rangers spotted the three emaciated cubs at about 5 pm the on a road in the park and lured with a bush pig’s carcass.

“I still cannot believe they survived,” said acting manager at the park John Adendorff yesterday.

The cubs were so hungry they gorged themselves on the bush pig, their stomachs distending by the second.

Adendorff said one of the lionesses had an absess on a paw and all three cubs were very weak, but they were taken care of and will now be held for six months in a boma so they can recover.
