Lira’s lyrics: ‘I have to connect with the words’

2010-08-12 00:00

SOUTH African soul sensation Lira will perform for one night only on August 27 at the Royal Showgrounds.

The singer’s career blossomed internationally when her DVD Lira Live — A Celebration reached double platinum.

In a global music scene brimming with solo women artists, Lira stands out as an performer with the widest spread of music fans in all age groups and backgrounds.

The 29-year-old is now established as a crossover artist capable of delivering to hip black urbanistas, suburban grannies and anyone in between.

“If something doesn’t resonate with me, I won’t do it,” she says simply.

“I have to really connect with the words that I am singing or the statements I am making or the clothes that I am wearing — or else I’d rather not be in this.”

Lira’s career was launched in 2006 when she released her Feel Good album, followed in 2008 by Soul in Mind.

She defines her music by its honesty, soulfulness, femininity and joy.

The pleasure she takes in being able to create music that appeals to so many different people is undisguised.

Although Lira’s music is frequently described as Afro-soul, the diversity on her new album makes the classification less easy this time around.

Soul in Mind proved to be the hot favourite at the 15th annual South African Music Awards (Samas), the country’s most prestigious music awards event, where the album won a leading four Samas, including the prestigious Album of the Year and Female Artist of the Year 2009.

Organisers bill this as an unusal treat for Pietermaritzburg music fans, with tickets available from Computicket. — Supplied.
