Little Tom re-united with mama elephant

A TINY elephant calf, which became separated from its mother in the Thula Thula Private Game Reserve in Zululand, has been re-united with her mother and the rest of the herd.

The 10-day-old calf wandered through the bush for around 18 hours before seeking refuge at the home of Francoise Anthony, wife of the renowned elephant whisperer Lawrence Anthony, who died in March 2012.

She was found by Thula Thula chef Tom Xulu, who spotted her trying to knock on Francoise’s door at 9 pm.

“Tom, named after our chef who found her, seemed intuitively to know that she could find refuge in our home. We decided to let her in and settled her into the lounge where it was safe and warm,” said Francoise.

“After being fed, she had a good sleep and once the rangers had located the herd, a rescue mission was launched, with our former head ranger, David Bozas, who had worked closely with Lawrence.”

Bozas felt that as the area where the herd was located was so dense with bush, it would be better to attract the herd to him and the rangers.

“I wasn’t sure if they would remember Lawrence’s call, but I decided to use the same words and on repeating his call ‘Hello my babas’, the herd stopped and approached us. It was quite a special moment,” said Francoise.

At 1 am, baby Tom was re-united with the herd and her mother, “Enfant Terrible”, which means “Wild Child”, after her behaviour following her rescue by Lawrence.

Ironically, Enfant Terrible was saved from a hunter’s bullet by Lawrence 10 years ago.
