Little girl (2) loses brave battle against leukemia

2007-12-11 00:00

TWO-year-old Samantha Millar of Pietermaritzburg died on Sunday night after a brave, four-month-long fight against leukemia.

Samantha was diagnosed with the disease in August this year and was recovering in hospital after undergoing chemotherapy last week.

While in hospital, she said that she wanted to go home for Christmas.

Family friend Mandy Cremer said Samantha had been fighting through the treatment but was very cheerful last week.

“This has come as a shock to all of us because we had faith in a miracle that she would pull through this,” she said.

Cremer said Samantha died of an infection that worsened, causing her to slip into a coma early on Sunday morning.

On behalf of the Millar family, Cremer thanked the public for their concern, prayers and support.

She also encouraged continued support for The Sunflower Fund, to assist in growing their bone marrow donor registry.

A bone marrow transplant from a suitable donor can help treat people with leukemia, but finding a matching donor requires a huge database of potential matches, and testing all the samples is expensive.

The Sunflower Fund raises money to cover costs involved in bone marrow transplants.
