Livestock healthcare to unlock KZN potential

2011-03-25 00:00

IN its attempt to unlock the potential of KwaZulu-Natal as a farming hub, the provincial Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development Department will launch its animal healthcare programme in the Ekuvukeni area of Muden this weekend.

The launch is part of a livestock initiative that is aimed at improving livestock production for subsistence and commercial farmers.

It is aimed at improving livestock production and assisting with the primary health care of livestock within the province.

A spokesperson for the department, Ncumisa Mafunda, said the department has observed that KZN has vast tracts of land suitable only for livestock production and grazing.

Mafunda said the department has a responsibility to ensure that the land is used optimally and the department has come up with the livestock intervention to unlock the potential of the province.

“KwaZulu-Natal has an area of 9,44 million hectares of land of which 7,74 million hectares are suitable for livestock production, but only 4,5 million hectares is being used for livestock production,” she said.

Mafunda said the launch comes after wide consultation with livestock farmers across the province about improving animal husbandry practices.

The event will kick-start with activities such as dipping, de-horning and branding of animals at dip tanks.
