'Llifesaver’:dept hands 20 buses to schools

2013-05-15 00:00

THE Education Department handed over 20 new buses to special schools in the province yesterday.

The handover ceremony of the 35-seater buses was held at H.S. Ebrahim Special School in Northdale. The buses will transport pupils at no cost to the schools.

“This is our lifesaver,” said H.S. Ebrahim Special School transport head Kumaren Moodley.

Moodley said the school spent about R13 000 on petrol per month for its five ageing buses and over R100 000 a year on maintenance.

“This cost is mostly borne by parents and this means a huge relief for them,” he said.

Sheila Wills, headmistress of Peter Pan School for the Mentally Handicapped, said their bus will similarly help them reduce fuel costs.

KZN Education Department head Dr Nkosinathi Sishi said he hoped the buses would curb road accidents that have claimed pupils’ lives.
