Load Shedding ‘unfair’

2008-01-25 00:00

Municipalities should be made to load shed more to ease the burden on Eskom clients. This is the view of frustrated Darell Lourens, owner of the Hilton Farmstall at Rotunda, who said that his business is being crushed by load shedding, which takes place for between six and eight hours a week, in up to four blocks per day.

Lourens said that his business, just on the cusp of Hilton, but supplied by Eskom directly, is suffering as customers are rather going to Hilton supermarkets, which fall under Msunduzi and are without power for around only four hours a week.

“What they get in a week in terms of outages we get in a day. It’s strangling us. If I was having only two power cuts a week, I would be having a party. There is no fairness … ”

Lourens said that he called Eskom to complain and waited on the line for 35 minutes before his call was answered. He was then told by an operator that the municipalities are big buyers and their needs come first.

Lourens investigated buying a generator, but found that for the three-phase supply he needs to run his fridges, he would be coughing up R500 per day for diesel in addition to the R70 000 price tag it has.
