Local ANCYL leader in court for theft

2012-12-01 00:00

ANC Youth League national executive committee member and Msunduzi councillor Rachel Soobiah appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court charged with stealing R40 000.

An Italian donor organisation alleges she stole money in 2009 that was allegedly deposited to buy a kombi to transport disadvantaged children to school.

Soobiah arrived at court elegantly attired in high heels and a smart brown suit. She was accompanied by a woman she identified as her aunt, but declined to make any comments.

She was not asked to plead by magistrate Dieter Schultz, and her case was postponed to January 11. Statements and the docket will be made available to the defence in the interim, the court was told.

Her attorney, Sergie Brimiah, told Weekend Witness Soobiah had instructed him to inform the media that she did not steal any money and she believes her accusers are on a witch-hunt.

The charge sheet alleges that in March 2009, at Save-U-Auto-Sales in Langalibalele Street, Soobiah stole R40 000 “in the form of a cheque being a refund for a deposit of a kombi, from Strikegold Investments CC”.

The complainant is Clara Tumino.

Soobiah was previously at the centre of a scandal over allegations that she ran illegal boarding houses.
