Local BEE businessman takes the broader view

Keeping the broader socio-economic perspective in mind is an important element of PMB-based businessman Ntokozo Sosibo’s recent foray into the business world.

He established Phelele Engineering Projects in October 2006 after having gained significant experience as an engineering professional.

Sosibo was recently nominated for the "Emergent Black Businessperson of the Year" award at the 2007 Nedbank PMB Chamber of Business (PCB) Business Awards.

Sosibo has previously worked at Sasol (operations technician), Total SA (depot supervisor), Eskom (projects team leader) and the National Bioproducts Institute (production services engineer).

His business centres mainly on the construction, installation and maintenance of industrial plants and equipment.

However, for Sosibo, business is not only about delivering products and services. "Looking at the devastating problems of unemployment in SA, I asked myself how I could contribute to the creation of employment opportunities … My business enables me to employ relatively unskilled workers without formal qualifications, train and develop them so they can become skilled …"

Sosibo emphasised the relationship he has built with his staff members, noting that, while the business has provided previously unemployed and unskilled staff with renewed hope, it is often staff members who are able to raise his spirits during "quiet" and difficult times.

While "machining" and fabrication work at local companies has kept the business relatively busy, Sosibo aims to secure as many projects as possible, so as to maintain a constant flow of revenue. In doing so, the company will be able to grow and create more employment opportunities for local people.
