Local activists suspended

2011-08-02 00:00

THE ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has suspended a group of ruling party members calling themselves activists, who have since June 30, staged a sit-in at the party’s Moses Mabhida regional offices in the city calling for the disbandment of the regional executive committee (REC).

The activists were slapped with the suspension letters last week. The Witness is in possession of copies of these suspension letters dated July 27.

In the letters it is stated that the decision to suspend the activists was taken by the ANC’s Provincial Working Committee (PWC) under Rule 25.12 of the ANC’s constitution and that the activists are summarily suspended as members of the ANC, pending further processes provided in the rule.

The rule states that the provincial disciplinary committee or the PWC with regard to disciplinary matters not being dealt with at national level by the national disciplinary committee or NWC may summarily suspend the membership of any member by acting in accordance with the procedures prescribed in the rule.

The members were suspended for behaving in a way so as to provoke serious divisions or a break-down of unity in the organisation and undermining the respect for and impeding the functioning of the structures of the organisation, amongst other things.

“The PWC was satisfied that exceptional circumstances existed to warrant such action including the seriousness of the violations alleged against you. In particular the PWC concluded that there was sufficient prima facie evidence to conclude that you have violated the following Rules as provided for in the ANC constitution,” read a letter sent to one of the activists.

The letters were signed by ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala. The Witness’s attempts to get comment from Zikalala were unsuccessful at the time of going to print. The activists’ spokesperson, Sibongile Mkhize, said that the PWC did not have the authority as, according to the constitution, branches must suspend members.
