Local artist to host Durban walkabout

2009-07-02 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG artist Faye Spencer will be hosting a walkabout of her work at artSPACE durban at 10 am on Saturday.

Wish List is the second solo exhibition by Spencer, who is currently lecturing in painting at UKZN Pietermaritzburg. She works mainly in oils and has an interest in both really small scale, and quite large works.

“Currently I am working mainly with a square format as I find that less autocratic than the conventional landscape or portrait rectangular panels,” Spencer says of her work.

“Much of my imagery is chosen for its potency as a symbol rather than its status as an actual object in the physical world. I feel a square format lends itself better to the idea of object as symbol.

“The themes that underpin my work have to do with issues like longing and desire, as well as with love and absence, loneliness and loss. The work for my exhibition, Wish List, explores both personal hopes for the future and common human desires.”

Also doing a walkabout at the gallery is Jeannie Kinsler whose solo exhibition, Collected, shows images that are both personal and universal at the same time. They are thoughts, memories and things collected over the years — a memoir.

Both exhibitions can be seen until July 11.

The gallery, at 3 Millar Road (off Umgeni Road), Durban, is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. Phone 031 312 0793.
