Local band The Ranks are off to Joburg

Having emerged victorious in the 5FM Demo Bag competition late last year, local indie-rock band The Ranks jet to Johannesburg to record their first radio single.

“We’re going to spend two days in studio with Darryl [Torr] to record a single,” said Neil du Plessis (20), the singer and guitarist for the band. “We initially thought we were going to do a few songs but he said we should do a single, get on radio, get people excited about it and then look at things like getting signed to an independent label.”

The competition, which was run last year, was conceived and hosted by 5fm’s DJ Koula as a search to find local up-and-coming South African bands not signed with any record label. It aims to give them an opportunity to launch their career in the music industry with a recording deal.

The Ranks is made up of Neil du Plessis and brothers Brett and Matt Jones.
