Local charity appeals for donations

GIFT of the Givers are supporting international rescue efforts to aid victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan.

They are releasing R2 million and sending a team to the Philippines to purchase urgent supplies, and launching a nationwide campaign to gather donations to send to survivors.

Imtiaz Sooliman, from the Gift of the Givers, an international aid organisation based in Pietermaritzburg, said: “The provision of food, water, shelter, blankets and medical supplies is a rapidly escalating emergency.”

The team will leave tomorrow evening to survey the situation and notify Sooliman if there is a need to deploy a rescue, paramedic and medical team.

“The first team will either purchase items in the Philippines or nearby so they can be immediately available. Thereafter we will be sending supplies by ship. If a rescue team is needed they will also be taking more supplies,” said Sooliman.

He called for the public to donate whatever they could. “People can drop off their contributions at any of our offices or warehouses. In Pietermaritzburg our office is at 290 Prince Alfred Street, and in Durban it is at 563 Ridge Road.”
