Local elections: IEC to officially launch 2011 vote

2011-01-12 00:00

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will officially launch the 2011 local government elections at a function at Gallagher Estate today.

There will be no announcement of the election date at this stage.

KZN IEC spokesperson Thabani Ngwira said yesterday the IEC does not announce the election date.

This is officially done by the National Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

It is not clear when minister Sicelo Shiceka will make the announcement nor when the election will be held. Political party campaigners are hoping elections take place in May to allow for campaigning.

According to Ngwira, IEC CEO Advocate Pansy Tlakula will also announce the dates of two voter registration drives at the launch, one in February and the other in March.

Ngwira said that once Shiceka announces the election date, the voters’ roll will be closed.
