Local films on show

2009-11-23 00:00

A SHORT film by Bruce Grobler will be the highlight of a screening at the John Oxlee screening centre at UKZN Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, November 28.

Grobler’s film, Wounded, tells the story of a man who is drawn into a world of violence, choice and consequence, against the background of crime in South Africa and the frustration that lies therein. It was shot on location in Pietermaritzburg, including night scenes in the CBD and at T-Rex Munchies (Bimbo’s).

To help fund the work, which was made for his honours degree, Grobler, a UKZN film, media and corporate communication student, took to the streets of Pietermaritzburg in May, armed with a placard which read, “Please Help Me Fund My Film”.

Speaking to reporter Sandile Waka-Zamisa at the time he said: “We get cameras at a reasonable price at varsity but I need about R3 000, which should cover all the expenses during the shoot.”

Grobler’s previous work, including Tom, a short story of courage, and Special Assignment – A strange report by Bruce Grobler, a mocumentary which was accepted into the Durban International Film Festival, have been well received.

Wounded will be screened alongside mocumentaries, documentaries and other local work. And, all proceeds from the evening will go to the Ubuntu children’s home in Edendale. Tickets are R30 and can be booked with Rob Hampson at 079 644 9930 or Bruce Grobler at 074 126 6104. Tickets will not be on sale at the door.

The dress for the screening will be formal, with snacks being provided in the form of wine, sushi and other bites, courtesy of Saki Pacific Grill and Tops bottle store, Parklane Spar.
