Local firms first in line to help build new Stay Easy

2009-04-07 00:00

CONSTRUCTION of the new Liberty Properties hotel, Stay Easy Pietermaritzburg, which will be managed by Southern Sun, is well underway.

Development manager Thea Marx told The Witness that the main contractors, national construction company Grinaker LTA Building East, are already on site.

The construction company is already busy laying the foundations for the development.

Several local companies are in the running for tenders within the development.

Marx explained that they will consider several factors, including quality and black economic empowerment. They will also consider whether the companies are locally based.

The hotel, which is set to open during the first quarter of 2010, is a R100 million 128-room development.

The work began several weeks ago and is set to be completed by February 2010.

“We are very proud of this new addition to the Southern Sun family.

The new Liberty Midlands Mall Stay Easy shows Southern Sun’s commitment to providing a superior choice to the people of Pietermaritzburg and visitors to the area alike,” added Graham Wood, managing director of Southern Sun.

Marx said although the site of the hotel covers a portion of the Woolworths wing parking area (compromising 250 bays), this site is not a popular parking area as it has the lowest parking ratio in the centre.

“We’ve established that the mall is 20 000 m2 over-parked. Furthermore, the proposed phase three of the mall will have an additional 1 300 parking bays,” Marx said.

The three-storey hotel will cover a “footprint” of about 1 500 m2 and will boast 52 parking bays.
