Local group in top five in Bafana song contest

2010-04-26 00:00

A GROUP of musicians from Pietermaritzburg are gaining valuable airtime on television and radio after making an impact in a national talent show.

Jude, a group of five members from Northdale and Imbali, have made it to the top five in a competion for the best song to promote the South African soccer squad. They impressed the judges with their unique harmonies and a well written song.

The song that wins the competion, which is being run by the SABC, will be sung during the 2010 Fifa World Cup to show support for the national soccer team.

The competition started about a month ago with entries from more than 4 000 hopefuls.

Said Daniel Chetty, a member of Jude, “The song is about cheering for Bafana Bafana as they take on the world during the World Cup tournament. If we win, our song will be used to promote our national team during each game.”

Chetty said that over the years the individuals who make up Jude have been doing session work, and they combined for the first time for the competition.

“This week we will be appearing on Selimathunzi an SABC1 TV programme. On Friday we were interviewed by Morning Live [aired on SABC 2 every morning].”

Chetty said they have been to several radio stations for interviews, and “it’s been a wonderful experince”.

“Now it’s up to the voters whether we win or lose.”

Callers who want to vote for Jude should SMS ‘Jude’ at 34022.
