Local history website coming this week

2010-02-01 00:00

A NEW local history website on the history of Pietermaritzburg and its surrounding areas will be launched this week, with the aim of providing access to the history of local communities.

The website, which draws its content from a variety of sources, is looking for interested readers’ submissions on all aspects of the history of the Pietermaritzburg area.

The website includes information from the pre-settlement era to post-apartheid days, as well as information on prominent people linked to the area, including Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

The website also features photographs and material documenting the change in the physical environment — both the natural landscape and the buildings — and how they have evolved over decades.

Also included are sections on the history of services, business and various sectors of faith.

The website, hosted by The Witness editorial team, will offer popular series from the newspaper’s archives, including The Way We Were, a collection of local history stories.

The aim is for the website to become a growing resource to which people in the local communities will be able to contribute. Keep watching this space!
