Local lads are moving up the Ranks

2009-06-19 00:00

HAVING emerged victorious in the 5FM demo bag competition in late 2008, power indie band The Ranks has gone from small-town dreamers to one of South Africa’s most exciting up-and-coming bands.

The band has toured some of South Africa’s major cities and received accolades from the likes of Prime Circle, after lead singer Ross Learmoth said: “You can be very proud of them coming from ‘Maritzburg... I’m sure we’re gonna see a lot from them in the future.”

The band that formed in late 2007 comprises Matt Jones (bass) Brett Jones (drums) and Neil du Plessis (guitar/vocals). The three-piece plans to release their first music video soon and focus on entertaining local audiences before heading over to Europe and becoming an international success.

Having worked with Grammy award-winning producer Darryl Torr, The Ranks is very near to releasing their debut EP which includes stand out tracks like A is for Ambulance and Adelaide.

The band’s foundation is firmly set in Jesus Christ, they say. “I’m really inspired by bands like Underoath,” says Du Plessis. “They are absolutely incredible but still see the need to stand up and speak the name of Jesus Christ. That’s what we’re all about.” The band says that God has opened all the doors necessary and will continue to do so.

See the band on June 28.
