Local musicians in line for top award

2014-09-03 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG gospel musicians have received two nominations for this year’s South African Traditional Music Awards (Satmas).

Wiseman Kunene and Sbongiseni Malembe said they are honoured to be nominated. Their 2011 debut album, Ivangeli I, will contest the Most Downloaded Song and Best Praise Singer categories in October in the Eastern Cape.

After receiving a message confirming their nominations, Kunene said he thought the message was wrong.

“I was shocked. We were not expecting it. This proves that our talent is being noticed. We thank God for everything,” Kunene said.

Malembe said he is still shocked. “We are very excited. I still can’t believe it. When I received the news I jumped up and down before praying to thank God,” he said.

Despite being nominated alongside veteran artists, the pair are confident they will walk away victorious.

“God works in mysterious ways. We trust the people of KwaZulu-Natal. They have been supportive since we embarked on this journey,” Malembe said.

“To be nominated means we have potential. God will be with us. He will open doors for us,” Kunene added.

They said they will embark on a campaign to make the community aware of them. Their second album, Ivangeli II, is out in stores now.

The prestigious award ceremony will be staged at the University of Fort Hare. To vote for Wise and Sbo and for more details, visit Satma’s website on www.satmaawards.co.za.
