Local nurse honoured for his years of selfless service

THE Pietermaritzburg Rotary Club has recognised the work of nurse Sugendren Pillay by awarding him the Rotary Vocational Service award.

Pillay accepted his award from the Rotary club on his 47th birthday yesterday.

The award came about when Sister Cathy Pillay, a practising nurse for 52 years, nominated Pillay for the award.

Under Pillay’s leadership, the Pietermaritzburg Central City Clinic was the first primary health facility in South Africa to be awarded full accreditation by the Council for Health Care Clinic in Southern Africa.

“He has really shown such leadership skill, and over and above that he helps the community and goes all out to ensure the community is being treated,” said Cathy Pillay.

Pillay has been vital in the new primary health care package at Northdale Hospital where he has cut down congestion and waiting times for patients.

“When John [PMB Rotary] approached me, I was very humbled and told him there was no need for it,” said Pillay.

Pietermaritzburg Rotary Club president Liz Dewes said he was nominated by Cathy Pillay for the vocational award but in the end it was a club decision.

“Sugendren was nominated and it was put to the committee and we all agreed,” said Dewes.

Pillay’s wife, Sharon, a nurse at Grey’s Hospital, said she was not surprised when she discovered her husband would be receiving the award.

“I feel like he has been this way his whole life. I think it is just the way people are made sometimes. He does this [helping people] without thinking. People are always calling and thanking him,” said Sharon.

Pillay said he enjoyed his job now even more than he did when he started as a nurse. “I wouldn’t change my job for anything. It has chosen me.”
