Local pupil off to UK to shoot

A LOCAL girl from Voortrekker High School, Isabel Benadé, has recently been selected to represent South Africa in the British Junior International Air Rifle competition in August, competing in the U20 category.

This wonderful achievement has come after starting shooting in Grade 8 when she was 13.

Under the coaching of Derek MacLean, who represented South Africa at the 1972 Olympic Games, Benadé has changed from a springer to a sporting rifle.

She has competed in various local events and in 2011 was selected for the KZN schools team. In 2012, she won one gold and three silvers for the Junior Sporter team, and was also awarded the Junior Sporters Champion trophy. Later, in September 2012, she won silver in the 10 metres standing section and was placed third overall in the girls U16 at the national championships.

She was then awarded South African Air Rifle colours.

Benadé has been busy in 2013, competing in the U20 age group. In March, she competed in the Northern Cape, where she won two gold medals.

At the most recent competition, held in Roodepoort, Benadé again won two gold medals in the 10 metres standing competition.

Her goal is to switch to a Precision rifle and eventually compete for South Africa at the Olympic Games.

In another school sporting highlight, 15-year-old Greg McKay from Kearsney College, demonstrated his extraordinary talent when he won a provincial U23 golf tournament last week.

McKay, who is in Grade 10, won the KZN U23 Strokeplay Tournament at San Lameer Golf Club on the KZN South Coast.

Bruce Thompson, master in charge of golf at the school, said Greg is an extremely talented athlete who works very hard at his game and deserves his success.
