Local pupil shines at recent show

JULIA van Niekerk, a Grade 10 pupil at St John’s DSG, had a fantastic time at the recent Horse of the Year Show in Gauteng.

Van Niekerk, a top dressage pony rider up until last year, has made an impressive transformation onto horses. Her horse, High Over Mark Almighty, won an in-hand championship and another of her horses, the young, imported Dutch Warmblood stallion Zandor (by Girbaldi), won the dressage in the horses five-years-and-under class with a super score of 80%.

This combination then went on to win the title Supreme Champion Dressage Horse on Show. This is an incredible feat as Van Niekerk was up against the top riders and horses of all ages from all over South Africa. The title was awarded to her by respected international judges Seigfried Dehning and Heinz Lemmerman, who are both from Germany.

The Midlands Group clinic held at Treverton School last weekend was a great success and all the riders learnt a lot in their sessions. The instructors, top eventers Karen and Martin Minett, did a wonderful job over two long days.

Ursula Oberholster and her team at the Treverton School Equestrian Centre have worked extremely hard at improving this superb midlands venue and their hard work is paying off.

The KwaZulu-Natal Eventing Committee is keen to hear from anyone who would like to become a jump judge, steward or other official at their events. They would like to hold some seminars to help people understand the rules and regulations of their demanding sport. Phone Priscilla Young at 082 569 9116 for more information.

This weekend sees Triple P Shows holding an affiliated showjumping show at Inchanga. This event includes the AnA Insurance Power Jump with R2 000 going to the winner, R700 for second place and R330 for third. For more information on this exciting spectator event, phone Deidre Fox at 082 653 1511.
